Understanding the history of the American flag endears it to the heart of the American people. The US flag has thirteen equal and horizontal stripes of red and white with a blue rectangle in the canton bearing fifty white, five-point stars arranged in nine horizontal rows of six stars alternating with rows of five stars. The fifty stars represent the fifty United States and the thirteen stripes represent the thirteen original colonies. The flag has several nicknames including Stars and Stripes, Old Glory, and the Star Spangled Banner. It is said to represent liberty, justice, and humanity. It’s colors symbolize our country’s patriotic ideals and spiritual freedoms.

Robert G. Heft is credited for designing and sewing the first fifty-star American flag as part of a high school history project in Lancaster, Ohio. Using his mother’s sewing machine, he assembled the flag in twelve hours. President Dwight D. Eisenhower chose his design over thousands of others to replace the forty-eight star flag.

To properly fold your nylon Flag, begin by holding it waist-high with another person so that its surface is parallel to the ground. Fold the lower half of the stripe section lengthwise over the field of stars, holding the bottom and top edges securely. Fold the flag again lengthwise with the blue field on the outside. Make a triangular fold by bringing the striped corner of the folded edge to meet the open (top) edge of the flag.

Turn the outer (end) point inward, parallel to the open edge, to form a second triangle.

The triangular folding is continued until the entire length of the flag is folded in this manner. When the flag is completely folded, only a triangular blue field of stars should be visible.

We have included a few etiquette codes for displaying your USA flag. The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing, unless it is the ensign responding to a salute from a ship of a foreign nation. The flag should never be allowed to touch the ground. If you plan to fly your nylon flag at night, it should be illuminated. When your flag becomes tattered after years of wear, it should be repaired or replaced.

If your nylon flag becomes so tattered that it is no longer recognizable as the United States symbol, it should be destroyed in a dignified manner, preferable burned. Contact your local American legion for tips on dignified flag-burning ceremonies. Although the United States flag code is federal law, it is only binding to government institutions, not private citizens. There are no penalties for private citizens because it would infringe on your First Amendment rights.

Support our troops by flying your Nylon American Flag today and thank those who have fought for our freedom!
